Networking Techniques

Introduction
The following article is about different networking techniques and how you can use those different techniques to break into the media industry. I will also be explaining what networking is in the media industry as well breaking down the importance of networking in the film industry, i will then be going into talking about how you can use different social media platforms to not only create an audience for yourself but also to network and make contacts within the industry and how important social media when it comes to networking in the present day. Following on from this i am going to be talking about and the different opportunities available to you in the film industry in the different stages of your career and also the different opportunities that you will have depending on how you operate and utilize your social media accounts and how you professionally present yourself online. Finally i will move on to breaking down the things that i have done through networking, the contacts i have made through networking and how i have used social media to try and carve a name out for myself.

What is networking and why is it important?
Networking is a term that is used in several industries however the meaning of networking in the film industry is creating connections with people through projects that you work on together or just meeting in the wild, the term is used primarily in the sense that you would become friends with someone in the film industry who upon making that connection can provide a benefit to your career as well as vice versa with them. Now when discussing the importance of networking with people when both breaking into the film industry but also when you are working with the industry, you will likely find yourself networking will your peers in the industry throughout the entirety of your career within the film industry. Networking is an essential component of the film industry and you will find yourself constantly networking with different people from all over the world and from all different departments of the media industry as a whole.

Networking is the single most important thing when it comes to trying to break in to the industry and make a name for yourself. Now yes both Talent and passion are also very critical in breaking into the industry and making a name for yourself but it doesn't matter how talented or passionate about the subject you are, at the end of the day it is the connections you have that will give you the opportunities and jobs to further yourself and get further in the door of the industry. Networking with the industry is something that you will have to do at some point no matter how much you like or dislike communicating and socializing with people. Anyway to conclude this segment of the piece i am going to essentially summarize my point with this segment of the article, the point being that if you are passionate about entering the film industry then be prepared to talk to a whole load of people and always remember that at any moment you could meet the person who could kick-start  your film career.

Utilizing Social Media
I am now going to be moving on to talking about social media and how it has not only impacted the way that it has impacted the way people within the film industry and most industries in general as well as how you as someone emerging and entering the film industry can utilize and take advantage of social media when networking with other people and peers within the film industry. So to begin with social media has drastically changed the way that people in the 21st century communicate not necessarily on a day to day basis but rather on a much larger scale, social media has created a digital link, a line of communication if you will between every single person on the planet.

Employment opportunities

Now i am using networking techniques to make contacts in the industry. Firstly I am going to talk about some of the experiences that I have had over the course of the last year to year and a half, so to begin with I have worked as part of a film studio, now while granted my time in said
film company/studio was brief however regardless of my opinions of the company or the experience i had whilst working as a part of the company it is still something that i can put on my portfolio. Even though it wasn't an experience that could be summarised easily i am still able to place the fact that i worked as part of a film studio for a period of time, regardless of the credibility or the popularity of the company, the fact that i at one point worked as part of a film studio will provide me with a necessary edge in the media industry. Another thing that i have accomplished    is that i took part and completed the BFI film academy. As of November 28th 2018 i am officially BFI alumni which will give me a huge advantage against the competition and my peers in the industry. my participation in the film academy shows to potential employers and or clients in the industry that i have taken the extra step to go out of my way to try and further myself in the industry that i am so passionate about being apart of. I also plan on applying for ffilm Cymru's foot in the door programme which consists of on set training next year as I have to be 18. This training will basically place me on an film/TV set and will give me some first hand experience on how a professional film set operates, it will also provide me a chance to network and gain new contacts within the industry as well as help me meet people with the same goals and ambitions as me.

Why have i networked in this certain way?
So throughout this section of the piece i will be talking about and breaking down the reasons for why i have networked in this specific way. I will be breaking it down into 2 different sections and these are the following: Why have i networked in this certain way and secondly how it will benefit me in the future. Firstly i will be talking about why i have networked in this specific way, and the reason why i have networked by going to courses and meeting people with similar ambitions as me is because if i am able to network with people who are both going into and are already in the specific sector of the film industry that i want to work in then i have a better chance at finding a career as a writer and director within the film industry as i will have more connections within that area. I have also networked with people who have much broader ambitions within the film industry and the media industry as a whole, the reason for this is so that i have a broad array of contacts within the film industry which means that when a make a film then i will be able to use my contacts to gain access to people within the sectors/ departments of the film industry that i need for my production.

Secondly, i am going to be talking about how the contacts, knowledge and other information that i have gained through networking in this way and how it will benefit me in the future and in my career down the line. It will benefit me because it will provide an opportunity for me to break into the industry through my contacts, primarily the ones that are already established and are a part of the film industry. Another way that it will benefit me is that the contacts that i have made through networking with other people who are also trying to break into the industry is that i get to know the people that i could potentially be working with in the future and this is beneficial for two reasons, the first reason is that it allows me to meet and network with the people who i could be working with in the future as well as the people who could help me with any future productions that i might work on. The second reason only really applies to the people that are going into the same sector of the industry that i am, it will allow me to meet and network with my peers and the people that i will most likely be competing with when getting work, networking with these people allows me to get an idea of what i will be up against when competing for work and this helps me as i will know what i need to better than and what i need to convince the employer that i am better than. Another benefit from networking and making contacts in the industry in this way is that it allows me to have a better chance at meeting people who might need me in the future to work on a production with them. Networking in the way that i have gives me a better chance at finding people who might need someone with my skills and i can provide that, making contacts and networking this also benefits me if someone i know needs lets say for example a writer for their production then i can take that and that gives me work and gets me further into the industry because i can network their and then the cycle could repeat, and i think you get the point.

To conclude this segment of the piece i am going to be concluding this segment by summarising the previous two paragraphs and develop a conclusive answer to the question. I have networked with people in the film industry in the way that i have because it allows me to meet people with similar ambitions as me as well as people who are in the same stage in their career as me, This benefits me as it will allow me to connect with the people who i could be working with in the future as well as allowing me to connect with people who could be the difference between small projects and larger and higher profile projects. In conclusion i personally believe that networking in this way has provided me with a more varied array of ways to break into the industry as well as different options when looking for people to help with a production.

How will i use this in my future within the film industry?
For the next section of this piece i will be talking about and breaking down how i intend on using the contacts and knowledge that i have gained from networking in my future career within the film industry. I will use the contacts and knowledge that i have gained from communicating with people similar to myself and networking with people both trying to get into the film industry like me as well as some people who are already apart of the industry and have established themselves within the film industry to get a better chance at being able to break into the film industry through these contacts who might be working on something and need someone to help and so i can find work through that and then whilst working on that production i can network with people there and maybe someone their is working on a production and needs someone then i can do that and then i network there and i think you get the point. However this is just one of the things that i can do with the contacts and information i have gained from networking with people. I will be able to use the contacts that i have gained by networking with people in the future to further my career within the film industry through any number of ways.

One way that i could utilize the contacts that i have made from networking in the film industry is if i am working on a production and i need people for certain roles then i could  utilize the contacts that i have made from networking in the way that i have through the different courses i have taken part in as well as the other contacts i have made over the last couple years to find people who can fit those roles and it is even better if the people that are filling in those roles in the production are people that i have known prior to working together on the specific production, the fact that i would know them prior would make the process of the production easier as i know that i can work well with these people which means that their is a better chance that the production will go smoother than it would if i had people who i hadn't met before as i wouldn't have to network with new people as well as work on the production.
